Believe it or not we've been taking better care of it since the turn of the century and the beginning of the industrial revolution when we didn't even give it a second thought. I've seen our air get cleaner as industries are required to monitor and limit emissions here. I've also seen great improvement in the waterways.
My husband actually used to test the emissions coming out of smoke stacks for power companies and other industries and before that he monitored waste water from power plants. He was in the environmental business. As the technologies continue to develop things improve.
